We are here to help you. At CMN, it is our mission to engage Catholics in this important pro-life issue, so that our Church can bring about repeal of the death penalty. We need your help, as well, in developing an efficient, effective effort. CMN hopes to develop a national network of state-based volunteers who will assist CMN in fulfilling its national mission. Perhaps you know of an interested Catholic who could make CMN part of their already existing work or ministry. Perhaps you know someone who is looking for a challenging but fulfilling volunteer opportunity. If you do, or if you have a recommendation, please contact Cathy Jarboe at CMN.
As they are available, this page will also highlight current job openings at CMN. Please see job posting for information about how to apply.
Job Posting – Program Assistant
Introduction to Organization
Founded in 2009, the Catholic Mobilizing Network to End the Use of the Death Penalty (CMN) is a lay ministry of the institutional U.S. Catholic Church that educates Catholics to seek faithful responses to crime, with a focus on abolishing the death penalty in the U.S. and promoting restorative justice. By educating Catholics and mobilizing them to participate in legislation, CMN has contributed significantly to the momentum of the national death penalty abolition movement. CMN has raised the profile of the death penalty on the U.S. Church’s public-policy agenda to such a degree that Catholics have played a game-changing role in all of the states to abolish the death penalty since 2009 (NM, CT, IL, MD).
Since it’s beginning, CMN has worked as a national lay collaborative of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and state Catholic conferences. CMN has since developed partnerships with Catholic lay leaders, diocesan staff/volunteers and secular organizations in the movement (such as the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, Equal Justice USA, and Murder Victims’ Families for Human Rights). We emphasize outreach to all growing and significant Catholic demographics with a special focus on Spanish-speaking Catholics and youth between the ages of 13-18.
CMN has developed dozens of effective educational resources, distributed freely to our partners and the public. Thousands of prayer cards, handouts, pamphlets, bookmarks, and stickers have been distributed since our inception. CMN also seeks opportunities for direct education, exhibiting and presenting workshops at major national and regional Catholic conventions.
The Program Assistant is responsible for keeping CMN running on a daily basis. Since CMN has two offices (one in Washington, D.C. and one at Mount Saint Mary’s University) and because many staff work remotely or on the road, the Program Assistant serves as a central hub in the Washington, D.C., office, connecting staff and maintaining a centralized record of programmatic activity. The Program Assistant will also be responsible for sharing this programmatic activity and news through CMN’s communication channels, including the CMN website, emails, social media, and organization publications.
Additionally, the Program Assistant is responsible for recording and analyzing all financial records of the organization and reporting them to the executive director on a regular basis. Though the Program Assistant will report directly to the executive director, he/she will work collaboratively with all staff on strategic program and resource development, as well as fundraising. As the financial manager of the organization, the Program Assistant will be working regularly on development, providing financial and budget information to other staff as requested and giving input to development strategy.
This is a great position for someone interested in working their way into a programmatic field such as communications, development, educational outreach, or state strategy.
