Friday, February 15, 2019, the Washington state Senate passed SB 5339, the 2019 bill to end the death penalty.
BACKGROUND: In October, 2018 the Washington State Supreme Court declared the death penalty unconstitutional based on the grounds of arbitrariness and racial bias. This decision, in addition to forbidding the death penalty as a means of punishment in the state, also commuted the 8 men on Washington's death row to life without parole.
The Supreme Court, however, did not rule out the possibility that the Legislature could come up with another manner of imposing death sentences that would be constitutional, which is why there are currently legislative efforts to repeal the death penalty.
LOBBY DAY 2019: Register for the Washington Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty's lobby Day on Friday, March 22, 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM. This year's lobby day will focus on the House Representatives. Last year the bill to end the death penalty made it through the Senate and a House committee, but never made it to the House floor for a vote. You can help make 2019 different.
This day will include a morning orientation session, followed by meetings (set up for you) with your legislators. There is a carpool link on the registration form as well, so if you have room in your car or need a ride check it out!
Registrations require your full address so that the Coalition can schedule meetings for you with your representatives. After you register, don't forget to send an email to your legislators - this includes a thank you email to your Senator if they voted for the bill. There will be a list of those who signed to take to those legislators on lobby day to remind them how much support they have for repeal. Please send an email even if you can't attend lobby day in person!
