Sheila M. McMahon, PhD, M.Div., MSW, LCSW is an Assistant Professor at Barry University School of Social Work in Miami, FL. Her research focuses on the prevention of sexualized violence, and building pro-social communities through the use of trauma-informed, restorative practices including interpersonal practices (nonviolent communication); community level practices (RJ circles and conferences), and macro approaches to violence prevention (e.g. cooperative economic structures). During the decade prior to becoming a faculty member, she served as a University sexual assault prevention educator and rape crisis counselor. She holds a Master of Divinity from Harvard University, where she studied applied feminist ethics. Subsequent to divinity school, she worked as a community organizer on issues ranging from poverty to war. She earned her MSW and PhD at the Rutgers University School of Social Work, where she was trained in intervention research at VAWC. Dr. McMahon is a licensed clinical social worker in Florida.
