Restorative Justice Basics

“This is the original meaning of justice, where we are in right relationship with God, with one another, and with the rest of God's creation....To do justice requires an honest acknowledgment of our failures and the restoring of right relationships between us.” (USCCB, "Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love")

This section examines foundational concepts of restorative justice and the various ways they are articulated and practiced.

It is important that individuals and groups who seek to engage with restorative justice have a shared understanding of restorative justice as a holistic approach, and not merely as a program to implement after someone is hurt. The concept is a cultural dynamic that includes building community and living together in a good way.
