Sr. Alice Gerdeman, CDP
Sr. Alice is a member of the Congregation of Divine Providence of KY. She taught in elementary schools and at Xavier University. An advocate in justice ministries staffed the Peace and Justice Office of her congregation for eleven years and served on Province Leadership teams. As coordinator of the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center (now Ignite Peace) in Cincinnati, OH, she brought together people of various faith-based groups to challenge unjust systems and work for a better world for all people.
Sr. Alice is considered “retired” but still very active around a variety of issues mainly advocating for peace and nonviolence, immigrant rights, and against the death penalty. Believing that all life is sacred, she advocates for the elimination of the death penalty in Ohio, across the country and around the world. Sr. Alice has concern for family members both of murder victims and perpetrators. She co-founded Families That Matter supporting family members of men who were about to be executed by the state of Ohio. She is a former chair of Ohioans To Stop Executions.
Fifty-three times, Sr. Alice, lead prayer outside penitentiaries in Ohio and Kentucky during the time of executions. She is happy to include exonerees and those incarcerated as her friends.
