After nearly passing legislation to repeal the death penalty in the 2017 legislative session, Lousiana will once more raise the question of capital punishment before it's legislative houses. The 2018 legislative session began on Monday, March 12th, and bills to repeal the death penalty have been introduced in both the House (HB 162) and the Senate (SB 51). Our partners in Lousiana are hopeful that this will be the year for death penalty repeal!
Right now, we are focused on getting HB 162 through the House Administration of Criminal Justice Committee. Send your Representatives a letter urging them to support HB 162!
In anticipation of the legislative session, Archbishop Gregory Aymond of the Archdiocese of New Orleans has recorded a video encouraging all Catholics to join the work to end the death penalty. This video follows a powerful statement from the Lousiana Bishops published during last year's legislative attempt to repeal the death penalty. You can view the video below.
As the legislative session begins to unfold, CMN will keep you up to date with ways you can take action to end the death penalty in Louisiana!
