The federal government is attempting to restart the practice of capital punishment for the first time in 16 years.
On July 25th, 2019, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it would resume executions at the federal level for the first time since 2003 and set five execution dates for December and January. The decision to reinstate the federal death penalty is wrong-headed and violates Catholic teaching. (Catholic Catechism 2267)
We cannot build a culture of life with a federal government that puts people to death. Raise your voice in opposition to the return of federal executions and urge our government leaders to uphold a consistent ethic of life.
▶ UPDATE: On December 2, 2019, the U.S. Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to allow the resumption of the death penalty at the federal level. The request came hours after an appeals court upheld an injunction which temporarily halts the federal executions pending for December 2019 and January 2020. The Supreme Court denied the request, but directed the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to expeditiously address the government’s appeal. The situation concerning the planned restart of federal executions is still incredibly volatile and requires your continued vigilance.
