STOP the Execution of Dennis Sochor

Florida intends to execute Dennis Sochor on July 14, 2026 for the 1981 murder of Patricia Gifford.

We oppose this execution as we do every execution. Capital punishment is an act of state sanctioned violence that violates the sacred dignity of every human life. In the words of Saint Pope John Paul II, “The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.” 

Dennis was sentenced to death by a non-unanimous jury: a practice allowed in only two states. Most of the State’s case at trial rested on the testimony from Dennis’ brother, Gary Sochor. Dennis’ attorneys have argued that Gary had a strong incentive to minimize his own responsibility in the crime. Newly discovered evidence suggests Gary Sochor may have made statements suggesting greater involvement. 

In post-conviction proceedings, Dennis also argues that trial counsel failed to adequately investigate and present mitigating evidence documenting his childhood abuse, mental illness, brain damage, and substance abuse. 

Dennis is a U.S. military veteran who honorably served his country. Having spent nearly four decades on death row, he has used this time spent on personal reflection and change.
