STOP the Execution of Tony Carruthers
Please contact Governor Bill Lee and urge him to grant clemency to Tony Carruthers to stop his execution from going forward.
Tennessee intends to execute Tony Carruthers on May 21 for the 1994 murders of Marcellos Anderson, Frederick Tucker, and Delois Anderson. If carried out, this would be the first execution in Tennessee this year.
We oppose this execution as we do every execution. Capital punishment is an act of state sanctioned violence that violates the sacred dignity of every human life. In the words of Saint Pope John Paul II, “The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.”
Tony was convicted without physical evidence and based on testimony that was paid for by the state and has since been recanted. The state denied this reality for decades and withheld critical information. Tony’s mental instability led to the termination of his appointed counsel. Ultimately, Tony defended himself in a trial that was riddled with so many mistakes that his co-defendent was granted a new trial.
The co-defendant was resentenced to 27 years in prison while Tony remains under a death sentence.
Please contact Gov. Lee today to support clemency for Tony Carruthers.
