New Mexico Bishops Urge Governor to Not Seek Death Penalty Reinstatement

In 2016, in response to the New Mexico Governor’s statements supporting reinstating the death penalty, the Bishops of New Mexico came out with a strongly worded statement. In part, the statement reads:

“Th[e] repeal of the death penalty was a milestone, moving New Mexico from a culture of violence to a culture of peace, justice, and love…The State created life in prison without the possibility of parole. This renders a perpetrator harmless to society…We oppose Governor Susana Martinez’ plan to reinstate the death penalty and call on the Legislature to reject the legislation.”
