Hours before execution, Julius Jones’ death sentence is commuted to life without parole
Just hours before Julius Jones was set to be executed Thursday, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt commuted his death sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The decision from Gov. Stitt partially-heeded two clemency recommendations from Oklahoma’s Pardon and Parole Board, which earlier this month advised that Julius’ sentence be commuted to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Due to Julius’ strong claim of innocence, his case received recent international attention and millions of appeals for his clemency. The problems with his original trial and conviction include racial bias, withheld evidence, poor representation, junk science, and more.
