Instruments of Reconciliation: A National Campaign to Amplify Active Nonviolence in the U.S. Catholic Church

“Instruments of reconciliation” is a new national campaign to amplify active nonviolence in the U.S. Catholic Church. Sponsored by the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative and the Conference of the Major Superiors of Men (CMSM), this campaign calls on Catholics to choose a date in June to share their hope for greater teaching and commitment to active nonviolence with their bishop and to invite him to affirm active nonviolence as the “nucleus of the Christian revolution” by 1) sharing and speaking about Pope Francis’ World Day of Peace message broadly within their diocese, seminaries, and other ministries and 2) concretely committing to an initiative to scale-up practices of active nonviolence. The campaign is calling on all to to support our bishops in their efforts to respond to Pope Francis, who pledged the assistance of the church in “every effort to build peace through active and creative nonviolence.”

CMN is taking part of this initiative to renew the call of the Church to be healers and restorers to all those effected by our criminal justice system. We invite you to take part in this campaign by observing these days in June and July to write your Bishop:

June 26: International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

June 29:  Anniversary of the Supreme Court declaring the death penalty unconstitutional in 1973

July 18: Birthday of Nelson Mandela, a world leader who enabled the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa

National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty

“All Christians and people of good will are thus called today to fight not only for the abolition of the death penalty, whether legal or illegal, and in all its forms, but also in order to improve prison conditions, with respect for the human dignity of the people deprived of their freedom” - Pope Francis #Pledge4Mercy
