Support Clemency for Charles “Sonny” Burton
Please contact Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles urging them to grant clemency to Charles “Sonny” Burton.
Charles “Sonny” Burton has a death sentence in Alabama and will soon petition the Governor and the state Board of Pardons and Paroles for clemency. At this time, the state has not yet scheduled an execution date for Sonny.
Now is the time to support his case for clemency.
Sonny was one of six individuals involved in the robbery when a man named Doug Battle was killed. However, only he and one other co-defendant were tried for capital murder, and ultimately Sonny is the only one who has a death sentence today. This is despite the fact that Sonny was not the shooter, nor was he even inside of the store when Mr. Battle was killed.
The state of Alabama admitted, in the context of his co-defendant’s case, that the disparity in sentencing is an “unusual and arguably unjust situation.”
After several decades on death row, Sonny’s health is deteriorating. Today, he is confined to a wheelchair. Sonny is a deeply spiritual man and has taken accountability for his role in the crime, including making a public apology.
Please support Sonny’s application for clemency by writing to Gov. Ivey and the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles today.
