STOP the Execution of Michael Tanzi

Please contact Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency urging them to grant clemency to Michael Tanzi, and stop his execution.

Florida intends to execute Michael Tanzi on April 8, 2025 for the 2000 murder of Janet Acosta.

We oppose this execution as we do every execution. Capital punishment is an act of state sanctioned violence that violates the sacred dignity of every human life. In the words of Saint Pope John Paul II, “The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.

Michael Tanzi’s life has been shaped by significant trauma and hardship. He suffered severe abuse as a child, growing up in a chaotic and unstable environment. From an early age, he exhibited signs of mental health struggles, which worsened during his incarceration. Before his crime, he battled substance addiction and untreated psychiatric issues, which may have influenced his actions. His case raises important concerns about the impact of early childhood trauma and the lack of access to adequate mental health treatment in the justice system.

Executing Michael for the worst thing he has ever done does not make the people of Florida any safer. Without a doubt, he is not the same person who committed his crimes so many years ago, a fact which he himself acknowledges, as he tries to help others take responsibility for their actions.

“I take responsibility for my actions […]” he says. “Prison saved my life. I would have never made it to 30 years old. I thank God for reentering my life and giving me the opportunity to find balance and change through His word.”

Contact Gov. DeSantis and the Florida Board of Pardons and Paroles to support clemency for Michael Tanzi.
