STOP the Execution of Oscar Franklin Smith
Contact Governor Bill Lee urging him to stop the execution of Oscar Franklin Smith.
Tennessee intends to execute Oscar Franklin Smith on May 22, 2025 for the 1989 murders of Judith Robirds Smith, Jason Burnett, and Chad Burnett.
We oppose this execution as we do every execution. Capital punishment is an act of state sanctioned violence that violates the sacred dignity of every human life. In the words of Saint Pope John Paul II, “The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.”
Oscar Franklin Smith, 75 years old, is the oldest person on Tennessee’s death row, where he has spent over 30 years. He has consistently maintained his innocence. In recent years, new DNA evidence has come to light, showing the presence of an unknown individual’s DNA on one of the murder weapons—raising serious concerns about the accuracy of his conviction.
Despite this, Oscar’s requests for clemency have been denied. During his incarceration, he has expressed remorse and has participated in rehabilitative programs.
Tennessee has not conducted an execution in five years. Taking the life of Mr. Smith will not make the state any safer.
