STOP the Execution of Samuel L. Smithers
Please contact Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency, urging them to stop the execution of Samuel Smithers.
Florida intends to execute Samuel Smithers on October 14 for the 1996 murders of Christie Cowan and Denise Roach.
We oppose this execution as we do every execution. Capital punishment is an act of state sanctioned violence that violates the sacred dignity of every human life. In the words of Saint Pope John Paul II, “The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.”
Samuel is a 72-year-old man whose body and brain are suffering the effects of aging — effects that are especially underscored given the mental health and brain damage testimony presented during the penalty phase of his trial.
If carried out, the execution of Samuel would mark the 14th in the state of Florida this year alone. Please raise your voice today to urge Gov. DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency to end this killing spree.
