STOP the Execution of Stephen Bryant

Add your name to this letter to Governor Henry McMaster urging him to STOP the execution of Stephen Bryant.

South Carolina plans to execute Stephen Bryant on November 14, 2025 for the 2004 murders of Willard Tietjen, Clifton Gainey, and Christopher Burgess.

We oppose this execution as we do every execution. Capital punishment is an act of state sanctioned violence that violates the sacred dignity of every human life. In the words of Pope Saint John Paul II, “The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.”

CMN does not have a public contact method to send letters directly to Governor McMaster. Please join us in adding your name to this letter today, and our partners in South Carolina will deliver the final list of signatures to the Governor’s desk before the scheduled date of execution.

Letter to Governor McMaster:

Dear Governor,

I am writing in regards to the execution of Stephen Bryant (DOC: 00005252) which is scheduled for November 14, 2025. I am asking that you do everything in your power to stop this execution from going forward.

At the center of my Catholic faith is the belief in the sanctity of life and the inherent dignity of the human person. This dignity is inviolable and cannot be lost even after the commission of a serious crime. As Pope St. John Paul II said, “The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.” This means we recognize the God-given dignity of Mr. Bryant despite the terrible nature of the crime for which he was convicted. The gift of life is from God alone; we do not have the power to create or destroy it.

I do not forget the pain endured by Willard Tietjen, Clifton Gainey, Christopher Burgess whose lives were tragically taken. Nor do I forget the unimaginable grief and suffering of their families and loved ones. As a Church, we pray for their continued healing.

But, I do not condone this potential execution as a form of justice.

Governor, please stop the execution of Stephen Bryant.
