Workshops by CMN

CMN staff will be presenting at several workshops throughout the conference. Precise date and time are still TBA, but keep an eye out for the following.

Death Penalty Abolition: A Path Toward Transforming Policies, Narratives, and Hearts

The death penalty perpetuates cycles of trauma and a narrative that validates retribution and state violence. Working toward its abolition can both save lives and also accelerate broader work of ending mass incarceration and creating opportunities for restorative justice. In this workshop, speakers will share from lived experience on death row and interfacing with the system of capital punishment. Attendees will also learn about the movement to end the death penalty and concrete ways to get involved.

Nurturing Practice, Nurturing Spirit: Learnings from RJ Ministry Community of Practice

In 2022, Catholic Mobilizing Network launched a national Community of Practice comprised of 500+ ministry leaders bringing restorative practices to their religious institutions. This spring, CMN also piloted a manual and formation program for introducing circle process in churches. Drawing on learnings from 20+ virtual events, presenters will share learnings and invite input on supporting restorative justice in faith-based settings at the intersection of spiritual formation, practical skills, and mutual support.

Say This, Not That: Effectively Communicating About Restorative Justice with Different Audiences

The growth of restorative justice with fidelity to core principles depends on greater public awareness and support. Public opinion polling shows that many people are uninformed or uncertain about what restorative justice is. Several groups have collected and analyzed data and developed messaging guidance to understand and combat harmful narratives with different audiences. Presenters will share processes, learnings, and recommendations to develop and advance healing-based narratives.
